About Durgapur
DURGAPUR lies in the district of Burdwan, in the state West Bengal, India, 168 km to the north of Kolkata. It is a well-planned industrial city on the banks of the river Damodar.
 
As of 2001 India census, Durgapur had a population of 492,996. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Durgapur has an average literacy rate of 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81% and, female literacy is 69%. In Durgapur,
 
Durgapur lies on the main railway line connecting Kolkata and New Delhi, and is extremely well connected to both these cities. It takes about two and half hours by express train to reach Kolkata and an overnight journey to reach Delhi.
 
 
Durgapur has a whole gamut of manufacturing industries, which include, Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP), Alloy Steel Plant (ASP), Alstom Power Boilers (erstwhile ACC-Babcock Ltd), Graphite India Ltd., Durgapur Projects Limited (DPL), Durgapur Chemicals Limited (DCL), Philips Carbon Black Limited (PCBL), Durgapur Thermal Power Station (DTPS), etc.
 
It is also having a Software Technology Park (STPI) consisting of various software firms like Pinnacle Infotech Solutions etc.
 
Many Government Hospitals and Private Hospitals are located in Durgapur.
 
The National Highway - 2 (NH # 2) passes through the middle of the city.
 
DPL and DTPS are Durgapur's main source of power. DTPS is in fact a part of the Damador Valley Corporation (DVC), which is a string of 5 dams and 2 power plants located along the river Damodar. Durgapur hardly has any power cuts all round the year and that explains the development of Durgapur .The well built, well lit roads add to the strong infrastructure of Durgapur.
 
With greenness all around and a very silent and good weather, Durgapur has an environment, which is conducive for studies and that is the reason why it attracts a very large number of outstation students. In terms of availability of basic facilities like electricity and water, Durgapur is a much better place to live in, than many other cities in India.
